A honeymoon in Bali

Bali suits a honeymoon that is more than a beach: a private pool villa in the jungle above Ubud, temple ceremonies and rice terraces, then a clifftop suite above the Indian Ocean for sunsets. The dry season, from April to October, is the most reliable, and the shoulder months of April, May and September are quieter. Ten to fourteen nights joins Ubud and the coast.

Why Bali for a honeymoon.

Bali combines what few islands can: a living Hindu culture of temples and ceremonies, rice terraces and volcanoes in the cool highlands, and beaches and clifftops on the coast. Its finest hotels are built around the private pool villa, so couples can spend their days together without leaving their own garden.

When to go.

The dry season, from April to October, is the most reliable for beaches and sightseeing. July and August are the busiest months; April, May and September offer dry weather with fewer visitors.

The wet season, from November to March, has heavy rain but quieter villas, and suits a honeymoon centred on Ubud and its spas. In March, plan around Nyepi, the Day of Silence, when the island and its airport close for a day: on 8 March in 2027.

Ubud and the coast.

The classic Bali honeymoon divides the stay. It begins in Ubud, among the jungle and the river valleys, for temples, rice terraces, cooking and the spa, and ends on the coast: the clifftops of Uluwatu, the bay at Jimbaran or the beaches of Nusa Dua, for the sea and the sunsets.

Four or five nights in each, with a private driver or a helicopter between them, makes an unhurried ten to fourteen days, with time to add a third stay in East Bali or on a nearby island.

A wet-season honeymoon.

Between November and March, the rain often falls in the afternoon, the island is quieter and greener, and the villas of Ubud, with their pools, spas and valley views, become a retreat. Couples who choose these months spend more time in the highlands and less on the beach.

Where to stay.

In Ubud, Capella Ubud’s tents each have a private pool and forest views, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, has private pool villas on the Ayung River, and Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape, welcomes adults only to sixteen villas in the jungle.

On the coast, the Bvlgari Resort’s villas step down a clifftop above the ocean, every villa at Raffles Bali has its own pool and garden, and the Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay gives each villa a private plunge pool.

Experiences for two.

Arranged by an advisor with the hotels and the local specialists who know the island:

  • A temple visit and a blessing ceremony with a local guide.
  • A walk through the rice terraces at dawn, before the heat.
  • A private cooking class with Balinese ingredients.
  • A spa ritual in a riverside pavilion.
  • Sunset at the clifftop temple of Uluwatu.
  • Diving or snorkelling with manta rays at Nusa Penida, and mola mola from July to October.

Private moments the island is known for.

Some of Bali’s most memorable experiences for couples are private ones: a water purification ceremony with a Balinese priest at an ancient spring temple, a table for two in the Tegallalang rice terraces, the sunrise trek to the crater lake of Mount Batur with breakfast cooked in volcanic steam, or a silverwork class in the village of Celuk with a family of artisans.

Privacy and where to find it.

The south around Seminyak and Canggu is lively and crowded. For a private honeymoon, couples choose the jungle estates of Ubud, the clifftop villas of Uluwatu, or the resorts of East Bali, which look across the Lombok Strait with no neighbours in view.

Arriving in comfort.

The drive from the airport to Ubud takes about an hour, and longer in traffic; a helicopter takes about twenty minutes. Arriving by helicopter, or on a later flight timed around the traffic, means the honeymoon begins at the villa rather than on the road.

Dining and wellness for two.

Ubud is the centre of Bali’s organic, farm-to-table cooking, and a private dinner can be laid in the rice terraces or by a river. On the coast, the clifftop restaurants of Uluwatu are made for sunset.

Bali’s resorts are famous for their spas, set in the jungle or on the clifftops. COMO Shambhala Estate, near Ubud, has a resident nutritionist and Ayurvedic doctor, and Capella Ubud’s spa follows the cycle of the moon.

Combining Bali with another island.

Bali is a gateway to the rest of Indonesia. A private charter reaches Komodo National Park in about an hour, for the Komodo dragons and the reef at Pink Beach, and the car-free Gili Islands are about ninety minutes by fast boat. An advisor plans the order so the honeymoon ends where you most want it to.

Planning: entry and the tourist levy.

Many nationalities can enter Indonesia with a visa on arrival, which costs Rp 500,000 and gives 30 days, extendable once; an electronic visa on arrival can be arranged before travel. Bali also charges foreign visitors a tourist levy of Rp 150,000, paid online through the province’s Love Bali site.

What a Bali honeymoon costs.

The cost depends on the villas, the season and the length of the stay. July, August and the festive weeks cost the most; the wet season the least. Multi-bedroom villas and the clifftop resorts sit at the top.

An advisor gives you a clear plan with every stay, transfer and experience before anything is booked, so you choose where to spend and where to save.

What an advisor adds.

An advisor reserves the right villa in each place, often with honeymoon benefits through their relationships with the hotels, plans the drivers and guides so no day is lost to traffic, and times the journey around the island’s holy days. If plans change, there is one person to call.

Your questions.

When is the best time for a honeymoon in Bali?

The dry season, from April to October. April, May and September are quieter than July and August.

Where should we stay for a honeymoon in Bali?

Divide the stay: a private pool villa in Ubud, such as Capella Ubud or Mandapa, then a clifftop or beachfront villa on the coast, such as the Bvlgari Resort or Raffles Bali.

How many days should a Bali honeymoon be?

Ten to fourteen days, divided between Ubud and the coast.

Ubud or Uluwatu for a honeymoon?

Both, if you can: Ubud for jungle villas, temples and spas, then Uluwatu for clifftop sunsets over the Indian Ocean. Couples who choose one often choose Ubud in the wet season and the coast in the dry.

What should we know about Nyepi?

Once a year the whole island observes a day of silence: on 8 March in 2027. The airport closes and guests stay in their hotel, so plan the honeymoon around it, or embrace it.

Can we add another island to a Bali honeymoon?

Yes. Komodo National Park is about an hour by private charter, and the Gili Islands about ninety minutes by fast boat.

Is Bali safe for a honeymoon?

Yes. Bali is Indonesia’s most tourism-adapted region, with a dedicated tourist police unit and an international-standard hospital in Nusa Dua.

Do we need a visa for Bali?

Many nationalities receive a visa on arrival of Rp 500,000 for 30 days, and Bali charges a tourist levy of Rp 150,000. Your advisor confirms the rules for your passports.

Is Bali good for a honeymoon in the rainy season?

Yes, for a quieter, greener stay centred on Ubud’s villas and spas, though the beaches are less reliable from November to March.
