Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
Ubud
Thirty-five suites and twenty-five private pool villas on the Ayung River, with the Mandapa Spa. Three MICHELIN Keys.
Bali’s finest stays fall into two worlds: jungle and river-valley retreats around Ubud, and clifftop and beachfront resorts on the Bukit peninsula, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua. Most have private pool villas, and many keep multi-bedroom villas for families and parties. Below are some that set the standard; which one suits your journey is your advisor’s to recommend.

Ubud and the valleys around it are Bali’s cultural heart: rice terraces, temples, craft villages and the Ayung River gorge, with cooler air than the coast. The resorts here are intimate and set in the jungle.
The coast offers the beaches and the sunsets. The Bukit peninsula and Uluwatu have clifftop resorts above the Indian Ocean, Jimbaran a long sandy bay, Nusa Dua calm beaches and larger resorts, and Seminyak and Canggu are livelier. Most journeys combine Ubud with a few nights on the coast.
The south of the island around Seminyak and Canggu is lively and crowded. For privacy, the finest addresses are the jungle estates of Ubud, the cliff villas of Uluwatu, where the property’s boundary is the visible world, and the clifftop resorts of East Bali above the Lombok Strait.
The private pool villa is Bali’s signature. Raffles Bali has 32 villas, each with its own pool and garden, including three- and four-bedroom villas and a hilltop villa. The St. Regis has one-, two- and four-bedroom villas with private pools; Alila Villas Uluwatu has two- and three-bedroom cliffside villas; and COMO Shambhala Estate has five residences.
At Amandari, the Amandari Villa has five pavilions and a two-tiered pool. Whether the villa you want is free on your dates, and how it suits your party, is what your advisor finds out.
Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape, welcomes adults only. Many of the larger resorts welcome children with their own clubs, including the Four Seasons at Sayan and at Jimbaran Bay, The Apurva Kempinski and COMO Uma Canggu.
COMO Shambhala Estate, in a riverine forest near Ubud, has a resident nutritionist and Ayurvedic doctor. Capella Ubud’s Auriga spa draws on the moon cycle and Balinese wellness traditions, and Raffles Bali’s spa focuses on energy healing.
